Teacher Appreciation Week & End of Year Gifts

As a former elementary school teacher, I can tell you that the gifts teachers remember most are rarely the expensive ones. It is the note from a shy student, the drawing taped to the desk, and the small personalized gift that shows a family really noticed. Teacher appreciation gifts are a chance to say thank you for a whole year of patience, early mornings and grading late into the night.

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

Teacher Appreciation Week is held during the first full week of May, with National Teacher Day on the Tuesday of that week. Many schools plan a theme for each day, like flowers on Monday or a favorite snack on Wednesday, so check the school newsletter for ideas. The end of the school year follows a few weeks later, which is the other big moment for a thank you.

Teacher Appreciation Gift Ideas

  • A personalized mug with the teacher’s name, a bright “Teacher” design, or a “Professor” design for college faculty.
  • A handwritten note from your child. Even a few words in a young child’s handwriting can bring a teacher to tears.
  • A class gift where families each chip in a little, so the teacher gets one meaningful gift instead of twenty small ones.
  • Classroom supplies tucked inside a mug, since many teachers buy supplies with their own money.
  • A gift card for coffee, books or a teacher supply store, paired with something personal.

What to Write in a Teacher Thank You Note

Be specific. “Thank you for a great year” is nice, but “Thank you for helping Emma finally love reading” is the note that gets saved in a drawer for years. Mention one moment, one skill, or one change you saw in your child. Older students can write their own, and those words often mean the most.

Do Not Forget the Rest of the Team

Classroom aides, special education staff, librarians, coaches, bus drivers, front office staff and school nurses all help a child through the year. A small gift or card for them is often a happy surprise.
