What to Write in a Get Well Card

You picked out the card, you have the pen in your hand, and suddenly you have no idea what to write. It happens to everyone. When someone we care about is sick or hurting, we want to say the right thing so badly that we freeze. The good news is that a get well message does not need to be long or clever. It just needs to sound like you and let them know they are on your mind.

Simple Get Well Messages

  • “Thinking of you and sending lots of healing wishes.”
  • “Take all the time you need to rest. We’ll be here when you’re ready.”
  • “Wishing you an easy recovery and better days ahead.”
  • “Sending you a big hug and a little extra strength today.”

Funny Get Well Messages

For a friend with a good sense of humor and a recovery that is going well, a laugh can be the best medicine.

  • “Doctor’s orders: rest, binge watch, and let everyone wait on you.”
  • “Get well soon. It’s too quiet around here without you.”
  • “I’d bring you soup, but we both know my cooking might set you back a week.”
  • “Your prescription: one dose of cheer, taken as often as needed.”

For a Serious Illness

When someone is facing a long illness or difficult treatment, skip the jokes and the promises that everything will be fine. Simple honesty is kinder.

  • “I don’t know exactly what to say, but I want you to know I care.”
  • “You are in my thoughts every day.”
  • “No need to reply. Just know I’m here for anything you need.”

Make Your Offer to Help Specific

“Let me know if you need anything” is kind, but people rarely take you up on it. A specific offer is much easier to accept: “I’m bringing dinner Thursday,” “I can drive you to your appointment on the 12th,” or “I’ll pick up the kids from school this week.” Write it right in the card.
